Recognising and Supporting DLD in the Classroom

Do you have children in your class who struggle with the language demands of the classroom?

If you’re a Teacher or Teaching Assistant looking to improve your understanding of DLD join us for our live webinars.  

Led by ex-teacher, now Trainer, Sue Marr, and a team of highly specialised therapists and teachers, these webinars are aimed specifically at helping staff in busy, mainstream schools to support children and young people with DLD.  

Afterwards you will:  

  • Be able to recognise the key signs of DLD 
  • Understand how DLD affects teaching, learning and social and emotional skills 
  • Know which conditions often co-occur with DLD and the unique challenges of each  
  • Have actionable, proven strategies that you can implement in the classroom straight away

In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr will cover the fundamentals of DLD and how to recognise it. It’s a hidden disability with surprisingly little coverage in SEN literature, yet is more common than Autism. Could it be language that your student is struggling with and not something else? And if it is language, where can you go to get more help, advice and training? 

Learning outcomes: 

  • Understand what DLD is (and what it’s not!) 
  • Recognise the signs of DLD within a classroom setting 
  • Understand the prevalence of within the general population and how that translates to the school environment 
  • Identify how DLD affects learning and impacts social skills and mental health

In this webinar, highly experienced Speech and Language Therapist and intervention researcher Dr. Susan Ebbels, alongside Specialist Teacher Sue Marr, will explore the conditions that commonly co-occur with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

  • To gain an understanding of the range of conditions that frequently co-occur with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
  • To explore the overlap with other neurodevelopmental conditions and DLD

Literacy underpins most things you do in class, but language underpins everything.  A child with DLD will have significant, ongoing difficulties using and/or understanding language which impacts on speaking and listening, reading and writing. In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr and Specialist Literacy Tutor Angela Belliveau detail why children with DLD struggle with literacy and share practical activities and approaches to support the development of literacy skills.

Narratives are challenging for children with Developmental Language Disorder, from understanding the initial gist of the tale, through to re-telling and building upon stories and using the right words to describe what is happening. Storytelling is crucial for being able to produce meaningful written work. In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr and Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Hilary Nicoll explain why narratives are difficult for children with DLD, how to spot when children are struggling with narrative skills and how you can support the development of written skills in the classroom through storytelling.

Developing grammatical skills is very tricky for children with DLD, yet it’s an important skill needed for communication and learning. In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr and Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Hilary Nicoll break down the reasons why grammar is so difficult for children with DLD and share practical strategies for supporting the development of grammar.

The ability to acquire, understand and use vocabulary has a significant impact on learning and attainment.
